Clockwork Rush

It is no secret that Rush is my favorite band. They were the first band I listened to thanks to my dad, a lifelong diehard. The complex music plus their desire to continue to improve has kept me listening to them for 15 years now. Just this past year they released their 20th studio album, Clockwork Angels. An amazing feat for a band approaching 40 years in the industry. Even more amazing is that this may very well be their most ambitious and complete album to date.

Although throughout their career, Rush has performed many concept songs, this is the first time they have done a full blown concept album. It's a standard Rush story about a young man unsatisfied with the way he is told life is supposed to be. Set in a steam punk world the narrator leaves his village because he 'can't stop dreaming big.'
The world is controlled by a watchmaker of whom our story teller becomes aware. He lives his life trying to find some reason to continue and when looking back at the end, he sees it was a life he would live all over again.
"Some days were dark I wish that I could live it all again Some nights were bright I wish that I could live it all again"
Musically and lyrically Clockwork Angels is the album Rush has been working toward their entire career. Bringing back the concept ideas from the 70s and merging them with the songwriting abilities they have been perfecting the last several years they have finally created their masterpiece.
In addition, Clockwork Angels marks the first time outside musicians received credit since Amy Mann contributed vocals to 1987s Time Stand Still. This time around it is in the form of a string ensemble with whom they have brought out on tour.
Closing out the album is The Garden. The most emotional song Rush has released. It is the culmination of years spent trying to blend their musicianship with their songwriting. Also featured is a guitar solo from Alex Lifeson that is on par with the likes of Limelight.
"The future disappears into memory With only a moment between Forever dwells in that moment Hope is what remains to be seen"
